Giving back does good | Our passion and support for animal welfare

Since opening our doors in 2012, our firm stance on environmental ethics and respect for nature has set us apart in the beauty and nail care industry. A commitment fuelled by our founder Sonia Hully’s personal passion for animal welfare, we work closely with suppliers and partners to ensure no Nailberry ingredient or polish would ever be derived from animal by-products or result in the demise of an animal.

While we may not often discuss it, these principles extend beyond our formulas. From global to grassroots causes, here we share a little more about the support both Sonia and we independently provide to like-minded individuals and charities...

“I’ve always advocated living responsibly and sustainably. Naturally, I support humanitarian projects but feel those charities caring for animals don’t get their fair share of the spotlight. After all, whoever said animals were less important than humans?”
Sonia Hully, Nailberry Founder

As a brand, we are proudly certified by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) as cruelty-free and vegan. In addition, Sonia has also long financially supported the vital work PETA does worldwide; establishing, protecting and educating on animal rights.

This ethos has, of course, extended down into Sonia’s family. Not only have they taken on a previous commercial farm, transforming into an animal sanctuary and rescue centre, but three of her younger children also adopt animals through WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) – another cause Sonia has supported for several years.

“I don’t wish to scare or cause stress for my children, but feel it’s important they understand the work I do, the causes I support and my decision-making around our lifestyle choices. Thankfully they accept it… in fact, they’re rather enjoying it!”

While animal testing on both cosmetic products and ingredients has long been banned in the UK and Europe, Sonia is all too aware of the loopholes some businesses use to get around these restrictions – a core reason why she stands firm in her decision not to stock Nailberry in China and continues signing petitions.

In addition to PETA and WWF, Sonia not only signs petitions against animal cruelty on a daily basis but also supports lesser-known charities, including the Soi Dog Foundation in Asia, Lady Freethinker and the International Humane Society International (HSI). The grassroots projects these remarkable organisations work on include fighting the Asian dog meat trade, campaigning against the fur trade and speaking out against the hidden suffering of animals, whether on the streets, on farms or in scientific laboratories. What’s more, she has also recently provided funding to support the production of a film to raise awareness of animal welfare protection.

“It’s simply unthinkable what is still happening to animals around the world. But, through the charities I support, I appreciate the work they do, see how and where my donations are being used, and know it’s going directly to the cause.”

Both Sonia’s and our support for animal welfare will continue… and it increasingly appears that you feel the same way. Today more than ever, concerns over sustainable and responsible living are being voiced. Vegan and cruelty-free beauty searches have never been so high as we become better informed about the choices we make. As a result, we are investigating new ways to advocate animal welfare and how you, as our loyal customers, can get involved too. Watch this space.
